Terms of Service

Last updated: July 18, 2026

1. Agreement to these terms

These Terms of Service govern your use of CheckMate's mobile applications, websites, and related services.

By accessing or using CheckMate, you agree to these terms. If you do not agree, do not use the service.

2. What CheckMate provides

CheckMate helps users organize restaurant receipts, trip expenses, item claims, reimbursement calculations, and links to third-party payment services.

CheckMate does not currently hold, transfer, custody, or settle funds between users. Payments are completed through third-party services selected by users.

3. Accounts and phone verification

Organizers may need to create an account. Guests may be asked to verify a phone number before joining a receipt or trip.

You agree to provide accurate information, protect access to your account and device, and notify us if you suspect unauthorized access.

4. SMS terms

By entering your mobile phone number and requesting a code, you consent to receive a transactional SMS message containing a one-time passcode from CheckMate.

Message frequency varies. Message and data rates may apply. Reply STOP to opt out where supported and HELP for assistance. Consent to receive SMS messages is not a condition of purchase.

Authentication messages are sent only in response to actions such as signing in, creating an account, or joining a shared receipt or trip.

Carriers are not liable for delayed or undelivered messages. Opting out may prevent access to features requiring phone verification.

5. Receipt accuracy and user review

Receipt details may be generated using automated processing, optical character recognition, or artificial intelligence. These systems may produce incomplete or inaccurate results.

Organizers are responsible for reviewing receipt items, prices, tax, tip, fees, discounts, totals, and assignments before sharing or finalizing a settlement.

CheckMate does not guarantee that automatically extracted or calculated information is accurate.

6. Claims and settlements

CheckMate provides tools for participants to claim items and view calculated reimbursement amounts. The organizer and participants remain responsible for agreeing on the final amounts owed.

CheckMate is not responsible for disputes between users, incorrect assignments, missed expenses, incomplete payments, chargebacks, or transactions made through external payment providers.

7. Third-party payment services

CheckMate may provide links to services such as Venmo, Zelle, PayPal, or Cash App. Those services are operated independently and are governed by their own terms, privacy policies, fees, availability, and eligibility requirements.

CheckMate does not control or guarantee any third-party payment service or transaction.

8. Paid features

CheckMate may offer subscriptions, trip passes, or other paid features. Pricing, limits, duration, renewal terms, and included features will be shown before purchase.

Unless otherwise stated, subscription fees may renew automatically until canceled. Purchases may also be subject to the terms of the applicable app store or payment provider.

9. Acceptable use

You may not use CheckMate to:

  • Break any applicable law or regulation.
  • Commit fraud, theft, harassment, or financial abuse.
  • Upload malicious, illegal, or infringing content.
  • Access another person's account or data without permission.
  • Interfere with or overload the service.
  • Reverse engineer or misuse the service except as permitted by law.
  • Send spam or unsolicited messages.

10. User content

You retain ownership of content you submit, including receipt images and expense information.

You grant CheckMate a limited license to host, process, reproduce, and display submitted content as necessary to operate, secure, support, and improve the service.

You represent that you have the right to submit the content and share it with the intended participants.

11. Service availability

We may modify, suspend, limit, or discontinue any part of the service. We do not guarantee uninterrupted or error-free availability.

12. Disclaimer of warranties

To the maximum extent permitted by law, CheckMate is provided "as is" and "as available" without warranties of any kind, whether express or implied.

13. Limitation of liability

To the maximum extent permitted by law, CheckMate and its operators will not be liable for indirect, incidental, special, consequential, exemplary, or punitive damages, or for lost profits, data, goodwill, reimbursements, or payments arising from use of the service.

14. Termination

You may stop using CheckMate at any time. We may suspend or terminate access when necessary to protect users, comply with law, investigate abuse, or enforce these terms.
