Privacy Policy
Last updated: July 18, 2026
1. Overview
CheckMate helps users organize shared restaurant receipts, trip expenses, item claims, and reimbursements. This Privacy Policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, and the choices available to you.
By using CheckMate, you acknowledge the practices described in this policy.
2. Information we collect
Account information
We may collect your name, phone number, email address, profile information, and authentication details when you create or access a CheckMate account.
Guest claimant information
Guests joining a shared receipt or trip may provide a display name and phone number for identity verification and access to the shared expense.
Receipt and expense information
We may collect receipt images, merchant names, purchased items, prices, tax, tip, totals, trip expenses, claims, and settlement details submitted through the service.
Payment destination information
Organizers may optionally save identifiers used to receive reimbursements, such as a Venmo username, Zelle phone number or email, PayPal identifier, or Cash App handle.
CheckMate does not currently hold user funds or process person-to-person reimbursements directly. Payment links may open third-party services governed by their own terms and privacy policies.
Device and usage information
We may collect basic technical information such as device type, browser type, operating system, IP address, application events, crash information, and service usage data.
3. How we use information
We use collected information to:
- Provide receipt, claim, trip, and settlement features.
- Authenticate users and verify phone numbers.
- Process receipt images and generate editable receipt data.
- Calculate tax, tip, expense shares, and reimbursement totals.
- Generate secure links for shared receipts and trips.
- Prevent fraud, abuse, and unauthorized access.
- Maintain, troubleshoot, and improve the service.
- Respond to support, privacy, and legal requests.
4. Receipt processing and artificial intelligence
Receipt images may be processed using third-party infrastructure and artificial intelligence services to extract merchant details, line items, prices, tax, tip, and totals.
Automatically generated receipt data may be inaccurate. Users are responsible for reviewing and correcting receipt information before sharing or finalizing a settlement.
5. SMS and phone verification
CheckMate sends one-time passcodes by SMS when a user requests phone verification, signs in, or joins a shared receipt or trip.
Message and data rates may apply. Message frequency varies based on user activity. You may reply STOP to opt out where supported and HELP for assistance.
Opting out of authentication messages may prevent access to features that require phone verification.
Mobile information will not be sold or shared with third parties for their promotional or marketing purposes. SMS consent is not shared with third parties or affiliates for marketing purposes.
6. When we share information
We may share information with:
- Service providers that support hosting, database storage, file storage, SMS delivery, analytics, security, customer support, and receipt processing.
- Other participants in a receipt or trip, when necessary to provide item claiming and settlement features.
- Authorities or other parties when required by law, legal process, or to protect users and the service.
- A successor organization in connection with a merger, acquisition, financing, reorganization, or sale of assets.
We do not sell personal information for monetary compensation.
7. Data retention
We retain information for as long as reasonably necessary to provide the service, comply with legal obligations, resolve disputes, prevent abuse, and enforce agreements.
Receipt images may be deleted after a retention period while parsed receipt and settlement information may be retained for account history, legal, or operational purposes.
8. Data security
We use reasonable administrative, technical, and organizational safeguards designed to protect personal information. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.
9. Your choices
Depending on your location, you may have the right to request access, correction, deletion, or a copy of your personal information.
